The last day of Art is You I spent in class with Mary Beth Shaw playing with her new line of stencils StencilGirl Products and wood icing. I couldn’t wait to take this class after 3 days of assemblage as I was looking forward to getting back to painting, painting, painting. Little did I know that this would be the most challenging class of the weekend. We started off working with wood icing which was developed by a friend of Mary Beth’s and it is indeed an amazing product. It took to the stencils like butter and formed a crisp, clean line. We were limited to a palette of colors I never work with and when I began the underpainting process I got bogged down in muck and mud. I had to hold back some tears I was so frustrated until I tossed the brushes and got my hands into the painting. Fingers whirring, I began to see the beauty in these complimentary hues and got my mojo bubble working. In the afternoon the liquid acrylic treatments made the panels come to life and I was hooked. Now I am thinking of cutting some stencils of my own and trying this with other color pathways to see where it will take me. Do check out Mary Beth’s stencils though, they are wonderful and some came home with me along with the wood icing. You can find it all on her site. Thanks so much to Mary Beth for being gracious, open and full of constructive criticism. It was a blissful end to a fabulous weekend of opening and creating in new ways.
